Just Costs Solicitors appoints London office head

Just Costs Solicitors has made its most senior lateral hire in London to date, with the appointment of costs lawyer Glenn Newberry, as director and head of the London office.

Glenn joins Just Costs from Eversheds, where he was head of the firm’s costs team. Qualifying as a costs draftsman in 1995, he now has nearly 25 years’ experience in the field of costs. Glenn was manager of Eversheds’ costs team from 1998 to 2002, when he left to take up the role as head of costs at Clifford Chance. He returned to Eversheds in May 2004.

Commenting on his decision to join Just Costs Solicitors, Glenn Newberry said:

“Having spent my career to date at two of the world’s largest law firms, this is a new and exciting challenge.

“I will be looking to establish Just Costs’ London office as a centre of excellence for high end commercial work.

“This is an opportunity to make a positive impact at a fast expanding, dynamic business.   There is so much potential in this role.”

On joining Just Costs, Glenn will be working closely with the firm’s managing director, Paul Shenton, who established and developed Eversheds’ national costs team before setting up Just Costs in 2006.

He will also be working with another former colleague, Kevin Doolan, who joined the firm earlier this year as a consultant and non-executive director having formerly been head of client relations at Eversheds.

“I know Paul and Kevin well,” he added.  “They have impressed me with their vision and passion for the business.  There’s a clear and achievable strategy in place.”

Said Paul Shenton, managing director at Just Costs Solicitors:

“Glenn’s arrival is a real statement of intent for our London office and the business as a whole.

“I’ve know Glenn since my time at Eversheds and he is well respected throughout the costs marketplace.   He was the outstanding candidate to head up our London office and we are delighted to welcome him to the firm.”

Glenn Newberry will take over the London office head role from senior associate, Monique Passalaris, who will return to client-focused work.

Added Paul:

“Monique has done an excellent job heading up our London office.

“Moving forward, we will be providing Glenn with the support and resources to grow the team.  Three new senior level hires will also be joining the firm shortly.”

During the past two years, Glenn has been involved in a number of claims for costs arising out of financial mis-selling claims, both investment and payment protection claims.

Glenn has been retained in a number of Court of Appeal matters notably Rubenstein v HSBC and Holdstock v HSBC, and has also represented a number of banks in relation to Section 75 claims arising out of Breast Implant surgery claims. Glenn was also retained by the Lloyds of London market to defend a £5 million costs claim in the case of Capita Alternative Fund Services v Drivas-Jonas [2012] EWCA Civ 1417.

Glenn’s other experience includes all aspects of costs disputes, but he specialises in major commercial litigation, including arbitration, and disputes between solicitors and clients in respect of fees. He has been involved in a number of reported cases including Griffiths v Solutia UK Limited [2001] EWCA Civ 736 and Inline Logistics v UCI Logistics [2002] 2 CLR 304.

He has also dealt with an International Arbitration Dispute involving the Moscow State Government, where the claims for costs topped $9,000,000, and was retained to represent the London Development Agency in relation to a dispute in respect of professional fees incurred on behalf of various businesses relocated as a result of the London 2012 Olympics.
