Eight firms named on first Mesothelioma UK legal panel

Mesothelioma: No known cure

Mesothelioma UK has named eight law firms to its first legal panel, who will be charged with supporting and raising awareness of the charity, as well as offering legal support to mesothelioma patients and their families.

The eight firms are Fieldfisher, Hugh James, Irwin Mitchell, Leigh Day, Novum Law, Royds Withy King, Slater & Gordon, and Thompsons.

Mesothelioma is a cancer related to exposure to asbestos and predominantly affects the lining of the lungs. While there is no known cure, early diagnosis and treatment can have a big impact on quality of life.

The UK has the highest incidence of the disease in the world, with around 2,700 people diagnosed each year.

According to the Health and Safety Executive, almost 50,000 men and 9,000 women died of the disease between 1981 and 2017.

The firms have been appointed for two years and will also support Mesothelioma UK’s fundraising events and campaigns, promote donations through legacies, share information for research, and support other companies’ claims work.

Liz Darlison, head of services for Mesothelioma UK, said: “All eight law firms were selected following an open and comprehensive application process.

“We’re confident that they’ll bring significant legal expertise to help us to promote the work of the charity and to increase our support for mesothelioma patients, their families and carers throughout the UK.”

Irwin Mitchell partner Adrian Budgen said: “We have the sad privilege of representing many hundreds of people and their families diagnosed with mesothelioma every year and we are all too aware of the devastating impact this terrible illness can have…

“The formation of this legal panel will enable even more people to obtain the answers they need and the justice they deserve.”
