FOIL reaches out across defendant claims industry

Evans: down to the nitty gritty

The Forum of Insurance Lawyers (FOIL) is set to reflect the increasingly joined-up nature pass4sure 00M-638 [2] of claims handling after announcing plans to widen its reach across the claims industry.

It has also elected Greenwoods Solicitors partner Rod Evans as its president for 2013. pass4sure CTAL-TA_Syll2012 [3]

At its AGM this week, FOIL adopted a new category of associate membership, meaning that organisations such as loss adjusters, forensic experts, valuers, costs draftsmen and brokers will now be able to join FOIL as a trade and industry partner. This aims to “widen FOIL’s representation of claims-related businesses”.

Mr Evans, who takes over from Don Clarke of Keoghs, said: “As we get to the nitty-gritty of implementing the seismic industry reforms we have spent the last few years debating, I look forward to leading FOIL through this vitally important period. Under Don Clarke’s presidency FOIL has worked closely with organisations such as the Ministry of Justice and has been ever more influential on the key industry issues of the day.

“FOIL plays an essential role in making sure the voice of the defendant industry is heard in debates on market reforms.”

He said it is “vital” that the Jackson reforms, extension of the RTA portal, referral fee ban and fixed costs/small claims track changes are “implemented as an interlocking package in a co-ordinated fashion…

“We are also beginning to see similar reforms being introduced in Scotland and I look forward to working with our Scottish representatives who will be following the reform process closely. We can hopefully apply lessons learnt from the English process to reforms north of the border.”

Away from civil justice reform, Mr Evans said he will work closely with FOIL’s sector focus teams, established in 2010, on policy areas outside the personal injury market, such as professional indemnity, EU regulation and issues affecting self-insureds.

David Johnson of Weightmans has been elected as vice-president.
