Former Senior Costs Judge joins 39 Essex Street

Barnes: thrilled

The former Senior Costs Judge, Peter Hurst, has joined 39 Essex Street as a costs arbitrator and mediator, in a move that is likely to fuel the growing interest in alternative means of resolving costs disputes.

Mr Hurst, a solicitor, retired in September after 22 years as the Senior Costs Judge, during which time he was also taxing officer of the House of Lords, and then Supreme Court, as well as the Privy Council.

The set said he has been instructed in a number of mediations and arbitrations since his retirement, and he will operate both in the UK and internationally.

Chief executive and director of clerking, David Barnes, said: “We are thrilled that Peter is joining us. Mediation and arbitration in costs disputes is a growth area both domestically and abroad and Peter’s vast experience as the country’s former Senior Costs Judge will greatly enhance 39 Essex Street’s offering in this area.”

Mr Hurst added: “I am delighted to be joining such a prestigious set as 39 Essex Street and very much look forward to a close association with them.”
