Class actions do have deterrent effect, academic finds

Class actions do have a deterrent effect in reducing corporate misbehaviour, a US academic has found. Professor Brian T Fitzpatrick said some critics claimed that the theory of deterrence could not be applied to class actions. He said academic studies were “unanimous” in finding that “the threat of a lawsuit deters misconduct”.
