CA backs solicitors’ lien over files after client ends retainer

The Court of Appeal has upheld a London law firm’s lien over a client’s files because of an unpaid bill after the relationship between the two broke down. The court rejected the client’s suggestion that Carter Lemon Camerons had terminated the retainer, in breach of contract.

Unfair contract proposals to force law firm transparency over costs

Law firms and others providing legal services to the public are to face new pressures over fee transparency as a result of proposals from the Law Commission aimed at protecting consumers from unfair terms hidden in small print.
